Beware the Sin of Procrastination (Gen 24:49-67)
Everyone has experienced procrastination and it is a struggle we will all face in our lives. Procrastination may seem harmless, but it can be a deadly transgression when we allow it to pervade into our service for the Lord. This will not only impact our testimony for Christ, but also hinder us from accomplishing God’s work. In Genesis chapter 24, Abraham’s servant mission was to search for a wife for Isaac. This mission is of great importance as it will impact the entire world, for it will determined the nation in which our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be coming from. Hence, the servant must ensure that he completes this mission and not let procrastination hinder him. There are 3 ways that Abraham’s servant used to not let procrastination hinder him: 1. Confirming God’s will (Gen 24:49-53)
Abraham’s servant knows that he needs to seek confirmation of God’s will
that Rebekah is the chosen one. Thus he did not delay in asking Rebekah’s
brother and father for confirmation. Upon confirmation that it is indeed
God’s will that Rebekah is the chosen one, he immediately worshipped God in
gratitude and gave them the dowry.
2. Persevering in God’s will (Gen 24:54-61)
However, Rebekah’s brother and mother tried to delay Rebekah’s departure by
requesting for at least another ten days to bid her farewell for they know
they will probably never see her again due to the vast distance between
Isaac and Rebekah’s family. Nevertheless, Abraham’s servant was wise enough
not to let emotion and family ties thwart God’s will from completion. He
persevered on by insisting that they should “hinder me not” and
let him leave with Rebekah at once.
3. Completing God’s will (Gen 24:62-67) Abraham’s servant brought Rebekah all the way back to Isaac who was awaiting for their return and God’s will was completed without delay. Abraham’s servant understood the seriousness of his mission and sought God’s help in completing his mission without delay. Like him, God’s mission for us as believers is to do His will. We must be convicted in our hearts to not procrastinate, but to always confirm, persevere and hold on till we complete God’s will in our lives. |
