God is immutable in His omniscience i.e. He knows all things all at the same time. And He is not bound by time. We, on the other hand, are people of the present. Thus, over time we forget things. And sometimes we forget the good things that God has done for us. The Bible teaches us to always remember the good things God has done in our life. We need memorials to help us to remember.

(1) Focus on what we are to remember: Christ (2 Pet 1:12). We are never to forget “the present truth.” 2 Peter 1:5-7 tells us what “the present truth” (2 Pet 1:12) is: when a person is born again in Christ, he is given a divine nature. It starts with salvation faith, followed by virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and agape love. Our Christian life must be real, not theoretical. Salvation leads us to have a deep and genuine relationship with God. We do not only say we are saved. We must live the life of a child of God. We need to examine our life as to whether we have been transformed and are a reflection of God. Or are we still living in carnality? Here, Apostle Peter’s focus is on the believer and Christ.

(2) The time for us to remember: right now (2 Pet 1:13-14). Apostle Peter knew that his time was short. The need and urgency for remembrance is right now. For parents, repetition and a discipline life are the best ways to help their children learn. Parents need to constantly talk to their children about the Word of God, pray with them before eating, taking an exam, etc. Let this be an heritage to our children. Remember the good things (Christ-honouring things, doctrines and teachings). What parents do now with their children is important. Church leaders are to ensure that their congregations do not forget Christ. They must remember Christ not just in their heads but also in their hearts, and live their lives accordingly. Our spiritual life must not be like a yoyo (going up and down), but it must be a continuous upward climb. We must never forget our Saviour, And we must never let the world lure us away from Him.

(3) The intent of remembering: beyond our life time (2 Pet 1:15). Apostle Peter wants his readers to always remember the Lord, even after he is long gone. As long as there is breath in him, he will keep reminding the people to remember the Lord Jesus Christ. It is important to pass on the present truth to the next generation and beyond.
