The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the only name under heaven and on this earth that can save a sinner from being condemned to hell. No other name on earth can do that except for the name of Jesus. This is the stupendous revelation that God has given to us by a simple statement in Acts 4:12: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” How great is Jesus’ name to you? Never let His name lose its greatness and significance in your life. Do you really know Him? Or do you only know about Him?

How important is Jesus’ name to you?

(1) The source of the importance of Jesus’ name is God Himself. Jesus humbled Himself, even unto the death of the cross, and God highly exalted the name of Jesus Christ (Phil 2:7-9). The name “Jesus” means Saviour. He earned this name by His active and passive obedience. He came down to earth from heaven and took on the form of a servant, even that of a servant unto death. If He had not done so, there would be no salvation for us. His name tells us of His purpose, i.e. to save. God accepted and exalted Jesus’ blessed name by raising Jesus from the dead. God said that Jesus is the only name that has defeated death for all of us. If you want the sting of death to be removed from you, no other name can do that except Jesus’ name. This is the only name that can open the pearly gates of heaven to the believer.

Satan knows the importance of the name of Jesus, thus he never stops attacking it. In the past, he kept Jesus’ name away from the people by denying them access to God’s Word. When he could no longer embargo Jesus’ name or God’s Word from being translated, he changed his tactics to one that confuses people with all kinds of definitions of the name of Jesus that are not according to Scripture.

(2) The evidence of the importance of Jesus’ name is revealed in Philippians 2:10-11, where God elevated the name of Jesus. God specifically said “at the name of Jesus” (Phil 2:10), and not the term “Son of God” or “Creator of heaven and earth.” Philippians 2:10-11: “…every knee should bow…every tongue should confess….” This refers to every believer’s willing confession that Jesus is his Lord and Saviour, accompanied by his bowing at the name of Jesus.

A Christian’s life must bear Jesus’ name well. When we sin, we must sincerely repent. And we must do whatever it takes to restore and protect Jesus’ name.
