1. A Result Of Being An Eyewitness (2 Peter 2:16

The Apostles did not just follow Christ for 3.5 years. It is a total surrendering of themselves and a lifelong commitment of following. Today there are many Christians who are contented in a negative way with what they are doing for Christ. They are contented to go through a routine and do not yearn, seek and desire to do more for the Lord. On the contrary, these people would be very ambitious in their secular jobs - striving with their whole beings to get ahead. We were once slaves to sin and bound for hell; but the Lord saved us and gave us eternal life in Him. We are debtors to Him and we will follow Him who had redeemed us. This is the result of being an eyewitness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. The Assurance Of What They Witnessed (2 Peter 2:16)

Apostle Peter wanted the people to know that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God and this belief is not a man-made story created by men to teach moral values. The Word of God tells us that we are sinners lost and undone, and we can never save ourselves. But God sent His Son to die for us; thus, it is about the relationship between God and us. Some people had scoffed at Christ's second coming. Though today we do not openly say the same things, do we live as if He is not coming? Men pursue after their own selfish desires without regard for Christ and His second coming. If professing believers do this, they are not different from these scoffers. On the other hand, the Apostles' minds were so much in tune with Christ's, that Christ's will became their will.

3. The Content Of What They Witnessed (2 Peter 2:17-18)

Apostle Peter witnessed God the Father's declaration of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 17 and the transfiguration of Christ. They were unable to fully comprehend the fullness of Christ's majesty and glory until His ascension. Do we hear and obey Him? We tremble and feel intimidated before the kings and lords of this earth but we are often flippant and careless when we come before Christ, who is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. How can we today be eyewitnesses of Christ's glory and power? “We have also a more sure word of prophecy” (2 Peter 2:19a) When we see the accounts of Christ recorded in God's word, we have a sure, stable and firm confirmation than the eyewitness accounts. For there were some who saw the miracles of Christ and yet did not believe. If our following of Christ is based on an eyewitness perspective of Christ's glory, it will not be mundane and lukewarm. Instead, it will be full of zeal and passion.
