When we sin and God’s Word convicts us, we must confess, ask for forgiveness and repent, and then continue to walk closely with God. In Genesis 13:4, Abram calling upon the Lord showed his desire to walk with the Lord. Here, Abram was faced with two challenges:

1) The conflict between Abram and Lot (Gen 13:5-9)

The two families were travelling together with their servants, flocks, herds and tents. Conflicts arose among the two families’ servants as they lived together. This conflict, if not settled, will affect Abram’s walk with God. They have a testimony to bear among the Canaanites. The solution was for the two families to go separate ways.

Abram cherished his relationship with Job. Being older, Abram humbly let his nephew Lot choose where he wanted to live.

2) The choice that Abram had to make (Gen 13:10-13)

Lot chose to dwell towards sinful Sodom. He looked and was attracted. He chose by sight. The men of Sodom were wicked before the Lord.

Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan (Gen 13:12). This was exactly where God wanted Abram to be. Abram was willing to be led by the Spirit, and to walk by faith and not by sight. He did not take things into his own hands. He passed this second challenge.

Many a time we make our decisions without going to God in prayer. We use our own wisdom, seeking to fulfil our own will. In walking with God, earthly blessings (eg: wealth) must not be the deciding factor. We must be willing and ready to suffer and take the path that God has planned for us. How is your walk with God? Has it been challenged by the demands of this world? Are you compromising? Does it bother you when your walk with God is not good? Let us walk with God today. If our walk is not good, we must do something to come back to the Lord.
