When we gather for worship or prayer meeting, how conscious are we that we are meeting with God? If we are not careful, we can become careless in our attitude towards worship. In Exodus 19:10-25, God was fulfilling His promise to His people. He was about to give them His Laws. Through the Laws, God revealed His desire and His will for His people. God’s people were to sanctify themselves before meeting Him.

1. Purity required in meeting with God (Exod 19:10-15)

God’s people were to purify themselves spiritually. God set boundaries for His people (they were not allowed to touch the mountain) so that they would recognize the holiness of God. It was to represent separation between a Holy God and His people. We are not to worship God at our own convenience, on our own terms. It must always be on God’s terms.

2. Privilege of meeting with God (Exod 19:16-20)

The LORD descended on the mountain and manifested His presence among His people. The LORD was pleased to meet with His covenant people. Through the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, believers are also His covenant people, the spiritual seed of Abraham. Believers must realize that it is a privilege to meet with God.

3. Prohibition in meeting with God (Exod 19:21-25)

Moses was to warn the people not to “break through unto the LORD to gaze” (Exod 19:21). They were not to go beyond what the LORD had allowed. There were boundaries and limitations in worshipping the LORD.

Today, we have biblical principles to guide us in our worship of God. Worshipping God must be within the boundaries that God has set. We must worship God in a manner that is consistent with His character. Our worship of God must never be man-centered. Worship is a solemn activity. It is a privilege that we can enjoy.

Do you enjoy the privilege of meeting with God? It is through Christ that we can enjoy this privilege. Do not take the worship of God for granted.
