Joseph died in Egypt. Even in dying, he showed forth his faith in God.

  1. It is expressed in his accepting death in faith.

When Joseph said “I die” (Gen 50:24), it was not said with resignation or hopelessness where he was miserable or giving up. Instead, he responded and acted in faith. He was not afraid of death. Similarly, men and women during the Reformation could face death in faith, for they knew that they are saved by faith. What about us? Are we afraid of death? Or do we try to run away from death?

  1. It is expressed in his assurance in faith.

In Genesis 12:1, God promised to make Israel a great nation. Joseph, by faith, was assured of the covenant promises of God. He knew the promises of God extend beyond his earthly life. His death did not mean the end of God’s promises. Based on God’s promises, Joseph knew that his people would not remain in Egypt forever. Thus, he did not fear death. As Christians, we too must not fear death because we have God’s assurance and promise of eternal life.

Throughout the history of Israel, we see the unfolding of God’s faithfulness. In 1948, God brought His people back to the Promised Land and made Israel an independent nation. God showed that He can keep His promises and Israel is a testimony of God’s covenant faithfulness. When we face death, what can we be assured of? We can always go back to the promises of God. Our faith can only be as strong as what it is built on. Our faith rests on the Word of God, the most sure foundation, an anchor in the time of storm. God’s Word will keep us sure and grounded. Do you have this faith that is rooted on God’s Word?

  1. It is expressed in his acting in faith.

Joseph commanded his people to bring along his bones when it was time for them to leave Egypt to return to the Promised Land. This was an act of faith on his part. He knew that God’s promise would come to pass, even after his death. He lived with eternity’s values in view, looking beyond death, grave and life on earth. He trusted that God’s promises would be fulfilled, and that they would be back in the Promised Land one day. Joseph also acted in faith by teaching the next generation of what God would do. We too must act in faith by living our lives with eternity’s values in view. We can prepare for death by living in faith now, serving the Lord and instructing our next generation in the Word of God, and leaving behind a good testimony of our faith in God.
