We have to live in peace with others. Making peace with those around us is important in order for God to accomplish His will for us.

1. Peace Desired (Gen 21:22-24)

Abraham shone for God wherever he went. Even the heathen people of the land acknowledged the presence of God in him. Abraham had survived hostile Canaan as God had been his help and protection. Hence, Abimelech desired to have peace with Abraham that would last even down to his descendants. Abraham also desired peace with the people of Canaan as long as it did not compromise his faith.

2. Peace Established (Gen 21:25-31)

Before making the covenant, Abraham had to settle a dispute over a well with Abimelech’s servant. It was dug by Abraham and his men but was taken by Abimelech’s servant. It was wise of Abraham to resolve this matter to ensure that it would not become a point of contention in future. Wells were important in those days for the survival. Abraham fought for the truth.

Peace with others does not necessarily mean to keep quiet when there is a contention. We must always speak up for the truth. Ignoring the truth is not pleasing to God. Keeping quiet may bring peace with the world but this is not the peace that God desires for us.

3. Peace Enjoyed (Gen 21:32-34)

Abraham enjoyed peace with the people of Canaan but his trust must still be in God alone. Abraham planted a grove to mark the occasion. The grove would continue to grow even after Abraham had died and would be a symbol to his people that the everlasting God would keep His covenant with Abraham.

Having peace with God must lead us to desire to have peace with man in a manner that pleases God. Only when we have peace with man can we bear a good testimony for God and lead others to also want to know Christ.
