Christians are called by God to serve and do His work. In service, we will face many challenges and struggles. Hence, we must know and understand the God who called us as it will give us the confidence and authority when we do His work.

1.  He is a covenant-keeping God (Exod 3:6)

God is a covenantal God who keeps His promises. He is a personal God who relates and commune with His people. He had constantly identified Himself to be the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Exod 3:6, 15-16). This enabled Moses to know and understand the glory and majesty of the God who called him as He is the same God who led and guided his forefathers. Upon realising this, Moses was afraid to look at God directly. However, despite being the majestic God who is full of glory and holiness, God still speaks to His people and allows them to approach Him just as He had allowed Moses because He is a personal and covenant-keeping God.

2.  He is a compassionate God (Exod 3:7-9)

God is omniscient or all-knowing. He had seen (Exod 3:7a) the afflictions of the children of Israel and knew (Exod 3:7b) about their sorrows in Egypt. God knows the afflictions and sorrows of His people despite Him being the great and almighty God, the Creator of heaven and earth. He knows the challenges and struggles His people face each day. He cares for His people and will help and deliver them from their struggles. This will give us comfort as we know that our God is a compassionate God who sees, knows and will help us in our struggles when we do His work. He is in control of every situation, thus we persevere through the struggles that we face and accomplish the work that He has called us to do.

3.  He is a comforting (assuring) God (Exod 3:10-12)

Moses had doubts about the task in which God had called him to do, which was to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. God had to assure him that He is with him (Exod 3:12). This assurance comforted Moses as he knew that the great and almighty God was on his side and that he would not be alone in his work. God had promised that He will be with us always, and the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, will comfort and assure us that God is always with us.

Moses was sent by God who identified Himself as “I AM THAT I AM” (Exod 3:14), ie. God is self-sufficient and self-existent. It indicates that Moses was under the authority of God and the ability to deliver the children of Israel out of Egypt is from God alone, and not from him.
