Jesus has revealed that before the end days, Christianity will fall away. We see that happening now when the level of holiness expected among Christians is very low. We see “Christians” believing in the health-and-wealth gospel and believing that the Bible contains mistakes. In such a climate, who then can inherit God’s Kingdom?

1.  One who is a saint (Eph 5:3)

A “saint” means an holy one (although not perfect). To be holy, we must be careful not to do sinful works. Beware of “fornication.” Many acts of fornication are seen as normal nowadays, eg: an unmarried man and woman living together. “Uncleanness” includes unclean thoughts and actions. Our desires must not be of the world. We must think carefully before we do or buy anything, so as not to follow the fashions of the world. Lastly, beware of “covetousness.” A covetous heart is never contented. Covetousness often times takes place only in our minds. Remember that God sees our minds. Godliness with contentment is the only cure for covetousness. One who commits these sins over and over again with no strength or conviction to get rid of them will not inherit God’s Kingdom.

2.  One who is thankful (Eph 5:4)

Ephesians 5:4 describes the sinful words that can come out of our mouths. “Filthiness” refers to vulgarity, or vulgar words. “Foolish talking” refers to speeches that reveal us to be fools. A fool says there is no God. Foolish talks also include murmurs and complaints which oftentimes lead to the undermining of the speaker and the hearer’s trust in God and His Word. “Jesting” is when people hide behind their jokes to make fun of and insult others, causing hurt to others. These must not characterise Christians. We must not engage in such sinful talk. Instead, we are to always engage in “giving of thanks” to God.

3.  One who is not an idolater (Eph 5:5)

Ultimately, one can only blame himself for his own sins. We cannot blame the tempter or the environment. The whoremonger indulging in fornication, the unclean person and the covetous man are idolaters who do not give Jesus first place in their lives. These will not inherit God’s Kingdom. Our lives and actions show who we are. We must be people who are after God’s own heart.
