Pastoral Letter 13 Jan 2019

When he was fleeing from his own son Absalom, King David said, "And I said, oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest" (Ps 55:6). Perhaps the dove is mentioned, because man used it for the quick dispatch of messages or letters. Psalm 55:6 aptly expressed King David’s wish in his dire condition. He desired to flee, and did flee immediately, from Absalom, his own son. Absalom was not only taking his father’s throne by force, he also wanted his father dead! Is not David troubled by this? Are you also troubled by certain calamities in your life? Is your troubled soul seeking after rest? Only Jesus can give you that prefect and complete rest.

Every sinner who flees to Christ will find rest. It is rest from the burden and guilt of sin, from God’s wrath, curse, and condemnation of the law, and rest from all spiritual afflictions. The physical body may remain weak and dying. The rest is not for this dying body. But God will give us a better body, and rest is guaranteed with that perfect body that will never die, grow old, or get tired anymore. Know that the world cannot give us this rest. In fact the world needs this rest. Only Jesus can give us this rest. It is the rest obtained not by escaping death, but by the death of Christ “who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Heb 12:2). Jesus finished the work given to Him by His heavenly Father. This is what Jesus has done for us in order that we may rest in God's hands. Do you desire this rest? May God help us. Amen.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Dennis Kwok
