Pastoral Letter 29 Jul 2018

Consider the word “worthy.” It describes someone who is fit, qualified, and competent to the task or role he is assuming. In the eyes of God, we are all unworthy because of our sin. Sin has caused us to be worthless and condemned before the holy God. If there is anything we are worthy of, it is to be cast into the lake of fire to be burned forever and ever. However, our status of condemnation changes completely the moment we believe that Jesus Christ saved us on the cross 2,000 years ago. We become different. Suddenly we are no more condemned. Suddenly the curse of sin and death is instantly removed from us. We are saved! We are delivered!

And the way God looks at us now is different. We have been transformed from a state of unworthiness to a state of worthiness. We are now found worthy in God’s eyes, not because of anything we have done. In fact we did nothing to save ourselves since Christ has done it all for us. His precious blood has washed away all our sins when we believe in Him by faith that He is our Saviour and Lord. And so now, we are no longer under the power of the bondage of sin. We put on a new status: no more a sinner but a saint who is saved by grace. We become worthy because of Christ. We become worthy by the grace of God. But it does not end here.

Apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, charging and exhorting them: “That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you into his kingdom and glory” (1 Thess 2:12). Believers are to walk worthy of the Lord. We are to walk as one who is saved, as a child of God and a citizen of heaven. Oftentimes when we examine ourselves honestly, we realize that we are not walking worthy of God. The problem with us is that we so easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. We allow ourselves to fall into temptation, and be lured away by worldliness and the pleasures of life; and we forget God.

Let us pray that the Spirit of God will convict our heart of how much God loves us, so that we will walk worthy of Him today and until He calls us home to heaven. Our walk must be a walk of faith. It requires us to faithfully and diligently live a blameless life before God and man. On our own, we are unable to do it, but with God's help and strength, we can overcome every difficulty and challenge that comes along our way. We must walk worthy as one who is qualified and fit for the task. We will surely succeed when we continue to walk faithfully. Each walk has an end. We will not walk forever, facing all the challenges. One day, our walk shall end. That is when we finally enter into God's kingdom and glory forever.

God is the One who calls us to walk worthy of Him. And as we walk, we look forward to the end of our walk, which is God's kingdom and glory. God's kingdom is our final home. He is preparing for us a place (John 14). And He will come for us to bring us to our heavenly home. As God's children and citizens of heaven, we must always remember that we are just strangers and pilgrims on this earth. But one day, we will receive our glorified body. And this is the glory which God has promised to give us at the first resurrection. What a glory it will be when you and I will be glorified forever. May God help us as we seek to walk worthy of God right now on this side of heaven. May we be exhorted, comforted and charged to walk worthy of God and be found faithful when Jesus returns. May God help us. Amen.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Dennis Kwok
