An unbeliever is physically alive but spiritually dead.

What does it mean to be “alive”? The world has many different answers. For some, to be “alive” is to do risky things for the thrill of it, while some live for good food; and others live for their loves ones.

God’s Word tells us that if we are not born again, we are dead in trespasses and sins. Apostle Paul wanted the Ephesian Christians to know how rich and blessed they were. He reminded them that they have abundant life because of Christ. Today, we Christians too have abundant life in Christ.

What were we like before we were born again in Christ?

1. Dead in trespasses and sins

We were spiritually dead to the things of God. The dead have no hope and no will to choose God. We were separated from God, living a vain life. Trespasses refer to the breaking of God’s law, and sins refer to the falling short of God’s standard.

2. Walking according to the course of this world

This means living according to the principles of the world. The devil has great influence in this world. He moves behind the scenes, working against God. The philosophies of the world do not acknowledge the presence of God and attempt to remove God from our lives. Christians today have to be careful of the philosophies of the world.

3. Living in the lust of the flesh

This means deliberately living in the lust of the flesh, having bad, wicked desires and passions. When men live like that, they are no better than brute beasts. God did not design man to live in this way. The consequence of sin is God’s wrath.

A truly born again Christian will not want to live according to the flesh. Christ has borne our sins on the cross, let us walk worthy of the Lord. Come to Jesus today to live freely and to be spiritually alive. Christians must reflect and evaluate their lives. Is it abundant? Or is it dead? Make sure of your salvation. Will you be found holy and righteous when Jesus comes?
