My dear readers,
(Extracts from GOD’S THOUGHTS: TIMELY WORDS FOR DAILY LIVING , Edited by Dr SH Tow)
COVETOUSNESS
53
He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that
poverty shall come upon him. (Prov 28:22)
54
Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove
far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me
with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is
the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in
vain. (Prov 30:7-9)
55
And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's
life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And
he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man
brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What
shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said,
This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there
will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul,
thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink,
and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou
fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those
things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for
himself, and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:15-21)
56
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into
this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and
raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into
temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which
drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root
of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the
faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. … Charge them that
are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain
riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. (1 Tim 6:6-10, 17)
57
For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter
day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet
in my flesh shall I see God. (Job 19:25-26)
58
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear
no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Ps 23:4)
59
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. (Ps 116:15)
60
The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in
his death. (Prov 14:32)
61
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of
death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God,
which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 15:55-57)
62
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and
to be present with the Lord. (2 Cor 5:8)
63
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Phil 1:21)
64
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also
himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy
him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who
through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (Heb 2:14-15)
65
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common
salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye
should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the
saints. (Jude 3)
66
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become
fishers of men. (Mark 1:17)
67
Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed
thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man
that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or
wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall
receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters,
and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world
to come eternal life. (Mark 10:28-30)
68
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny
himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will
save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake,
the same shall save it. … And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his
hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:23-24, 62)
