Chastity and Purity (Lev 15)
In Leviticus 15, the issue of uncleanness is an issue that is spiritual in nature, not just physical. It is a serious issue, because when a person is unclean, he cannot come into the presence of God. Leviticus 15:1-18 (the first part) relates to males, while Leviticus 15:19-33 (the second part) relates to females. Whether male or female, the following principles are applicable to us. 1 Standard of chastity and purity (Lev 15:1-18) The world is immoral and idolatrous. But the people of God have a different standard that is given to them by God. And we must abide by God’s standard. Leviticus 15:2-3 describes an issue from a man’s private part. This could be caused by a sexually transmitted disease (STD), implying that the man had committed adultery. Leviticus 15:4-13 teaches that anything that this man touches is considered unclean. This shows us that corruption spreads by contamination. Sin is not a small matter. It will corrupt the entire person, and more. As this man’s uncleanness is private in nature, it may not be known to others. But we must remember that God knows and sees all. We can never hide our sins from God. Leviticus 15:15-18 describes the sexual relationship between husband and wife, which is legitimate. But both will be unclean until evening. Even though it is not a sin for a husband to have a sexual relationship with his wife, it is to remind the children of Israel the importance of purity and holiness. 2 Preservation of chastity and purity (Lev 15:19-27) Leviticus 15:19-24 deals with a woman’s normal monthly issue of blood. The woman is considered to be in a state of uncleanness. Leviticus 15:25-27 deals with a woman’s monthly issue of blood that is abnormally long. She is considered unclean throughout the entire period. It teaches the importance of preserving our purity and chastity throughout the entire period. 3 Provision for chastity and purity (Lev 15:28-33) Leviticus 15:28-33 describes the cleansing process. Both sin and burnt offerings are to be offered to God to seek forgiveness. In order to be cleansed from our sins and receive forgiveness, we must first come before the Lord Jesus Christ and receive Him as our Lord and Saviour. Otherwise, we will still be in sin. Without Jesus, we cannot be cleansed and we cannot be saved. Come to Jesus, and be cleansed and saved. |
