The False Prophet: His Origin and Ministry (Rev 13:11-14)
In the last days (now), there are many false prophets (cf. Matthew 24)—we recognize them by their teachings. When any doctrine is explicitly taught in the Bible, anyone who teaches otherwise is in error. If they refuse to correct these errors when they are pointed out, regardless of how “small” they may seem, they are false prophets. We must be very wary of false prophets because they will influence how we view Christ and, ultimately, our eternal destiny—either heaven or the lake of fire for those who are deceived. Therefore, we should search the Scriptures regarding the messages we hear and not simply accept the word of any “trusted” institutions or individuals. Be very careful about what we hear over the internet. Protect our faith at all costs. We are not obliged to follow anyone unless they follow Christ. In Revelation 13:11–14, we read about the False Prophet (also mentioned in Revelation 19:20 and 20:10), who is described as a beast coming out of the earth (not mysterious). He is of the same kind as the first beast (mentioned in Revelation 13:1–10—the Antichrist). However, unlike the Antichrist, who is ferocious, this beast is a man with a very fatherly demeanor, like a lamb, yet possessing power and authority (two horns). He comes from the dragon (who is also the serpent, the devil) (v.11). We must listen carefully to what he says, not merely observe his outward disposition, in order to avoid being deceived. His ministry is one of imitation and deception (vv.12–14). The False Prophet imitates how Christianity “works.” Just as the Holy Spirit exalts Christ, the False Prophet promotes the Antichrist. He can also perform signs and wonders, such as calling fire down from heaven. He will present the Antichrist as the promised Messiah, one who died and came back to life. The Antichrist and the False Prophet will succeed in deceiving many because God permits it—but only for a limited time of seven years. This ministry of deception is intended to lead all to worship the Antichrist. They will even construct an image of the Antichrist and place it in the holy place. During the first 3.5 years of the Great Tribulation, one side will consist of the two witnesses of God, who will perform miracles, while the other side will be the False Prophet (empowered by the dragon), who also performs great wonders. The world will witness this spiritual conflict and must make a decision—to believe God’s servants or to follow the dragon. Each individual’s destiny and eternity are at stake. Even today, following false teachings leads to destruction. A decision must be made. There is no middle ground (no neutrality—because we are already born in sin). It is either truth or falsehood; heaven or the lake of fire; God or Satan. By refusing to make a decision, we are, in effect, choosing the side of the devil. |
