Understanding Restitution (Lev 6:1-7)
Which is more serious? An offence committed against God? Or an offence committed against man? Most of us will say that an offence against God is more serious. However, we must realise that an offense against man is also an offence against God. Thus, both offences are serious. 1 The hurt and harm caused by sin (Lev 6:1-3) A sin against man is also a sin against God. It displeases the Lord and is an offence to Him. Our sinful acts cause hurt and harm to others. Morality must be defined by God. He is the One who gives us the moral law; and He sets us the moral standard. Any trespass of God’s law is a sin against God. Examples of sins that hurt our fellowmen: (a) when you lie to your neighbour concerning that which was entrusted to you (b) lying to your neighbour with regard to a business dealing (c) robbing, or stealing from, your neighbour (d) deceiving your neighbour The Bible uses these examples because these sins are not known easily or can be seen physically or outwardly. Yet, God sees and knows our thoughts. We do not realise the seriousness of our sins until we see the harm that they can cause. There are consequences to sins. 2 The restitution required (Lev 6:4-5) The sinner must restore to his neighbour and give another 20% (Lev 6:5) to his neighbour who was offended or hurt. Restoration must first be made to man quickly before we seek restoration to God. 3 The sacrifice required (Lev 6:6-7) After restitution and reconciliation have been completed, forgiveness must be sought from the Lord. Restitution is not enough on its own. Bringing the trespass offering must follow. Christ must be the centre of all our relationships. If we do not walk closely with our Him, how can we make right with our fellowmen? |
