  1. Luke 1:26-29: Jesus is the Son of Mary. The birth of Jesus is so unique that God sent His angel Gabriel to announce His birth, and that the virgin Mary would be the one to conceive this child. The virgin Mary was espoused to Joseph who was of the house of David (Luke 1:27). Mary too was of the linage of David. Jesus, being born of a woman, is a human being who possesses all the attributes of a man and He grew the normal, human way, i.e. He had to eat, increase in learning, in stature, in wisdom. As the man Jesus, He subjected Himself to nature (i.e. heat, cold, wind, waves), and was bounded by time and space. He walked and lived among men. However, He did not surrender His divine attributes (i.e. His omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience), but He gave up the exercising of these attributes. In all these, He is without sin, unlike those born under Adam and are under the curse of Adam’s sin. As the Son of virgin Mary, Jesus bypassed the genealogy of Joseph, and overcame the curse. The doctrine of His virgin birth is under attack today. To be our Saviour, Jesus must be sinless. Being sinless, He is the perfect sacrifice and perfect representative of man.
  1. Luke 1:30-31: Jesus is God’s favour to man. Mary’s conception of Jesus in her womb is the fulfillment of the prophesy in Genesis 3:15. Mary “hast found favour with God” (Luke 1:20) and she was “highly favoured” (Luke 1:28). The root word of favour is grace. Thus, to be favoured by God is to be accepted by the grace of God. Luke 1:46-48 reveals that Mary regarded herself of low estate and a sinner, one who needed a Saviour. And it is by the grace of God that she was accepted. Likewise, we who are born-again believers are also favoured, accepted (Eph 1:6) of God by grace through our Saviour Jesus. Jesus came to the world to save us sinners. Our greatest need is to be delivered from sin, and be freed from the bondage of sin. Jesus is our Saviour. He became man to represent man to die on the cross, to deliver us from our sins. His sacrifice was perfect, and accepted of God the Father. And Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, and is now alive for evermore.
  1. Luke 1:32-33: Jesus shall be Great and shall be called the Son of the Highest. Now that Jesus has risen from the dead, and alive forevermore, the prophesy in Luke 1:32-33 can be fulfilled in the future. On God’s appointed day, Jesus will return to reign forever, and He shall be great and be called the Son of the Highest. He is coming to receive us at His Second Coming. Today, as we serve, let us not forget that we are serving the Son of God. As believers, may this encourage us to serve Him with the right mind and spirit. If you are not a believer, why not believe and accept Him today?
