When God Calls (Exod 3:1-5)
As Christians, we have been called to salvation, and also to service. We are saved to serve. It is a privilege to serve God. At different phases of our life, the areas of our service to God may be different.
1. The calling is unique (Exod 3:1-2) (a) Unique in time: Each one of us has a different and unique calling. When God called Moses, it was unique to Moses’ time (c.f. Acts 7:30). It was at the end of his second 40 years of life, after spending 40 years in the wilderness. God’s timing was neither too early nor too late. It was just right. We too must be sensitive to God’s timing. God’s timing is different for different individuals. (b) Unique in place: When God called Moses, it was at a unique place: Mt Sinai (or Horeb). God also has a unique place when He calls us, and we ought to be sensitive to it. Wherever we may be, we must be walking close with God, and be ever ready to hear His call. When God called Moses, he was given a unique sign: the burning bush. For us, since the scripture has been completed, God will reveal His sign to us through His Word. The signs that God gives to us are in His Word. Thus, we are not to look for signs outside of the Bible.
2. The calling demands a response (Exod 3:3-5) When God called Moses, Moses turned aside towards the burning bush (Exod 3:3), i.e. turning away from distractions. Likewise, when God calls us, we are to turn aside from distractions and focus on God. We must look to God and see where He is directing us. And trust in Him for His provision. When God called Moses, he responded, “Here am I” (Exod 3:4). He had a spirit of surrender and submission to God. Likewise, if we have turned aside and surrendered ourselves to God, we too can say “Here am I.” We will then be able to present our bodies a living sacrifice to the Lord which is our reasonable service. When God called Moses, He told him that he was on holy ground (Exod 3:5). The ground is not inherently holy. It is holy because of the presence of God. This shows that God’s calling is a solemn, holy and precious call. When we are approached to serve God, do we see it as a solemn call from God to serve Him? |
