God remains faithful despite man’s unfaithfulness, and He will always fulfill His promises.

God’s promises fulfilled despite the problems within Jacob’s family (Gen 30:1-24)

Jacob had failed in leading his family. He chose to remain silent and became the tool of struggle between his two wives. Through the wrestling of Rachel and Leah, God added six more sons (Dan, Naphtali, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph) and one daughter (Dinah) to the family. Despite their failings, God intervened and raised a nation which He had promised through Jacob’s family. However, it does not excuse Jacob from his failures and for his not exercising leadership in the family. By way of application, when God has given us a calling, God will fulfill this calling and use us despite our failings. God works through us despite who we are. Having then this understanding, who are we to consider ourselves good enough to serve God? We must be thankful and humble, and not respond in pride.

God’s promise fulfilled despite the foolishness and pride of man (Gen 30:25-43)

Laban acknowledged that God was with Jacob and that God had blessed him through Jacob. This was a wonderful testimony of Jacob even though he was deceived to serve Laban all these years. We too must serve our earthly masters with the desire to shine for Christ. Nevertheless, Laban continued to scheme against Jacob, hoping that Jacob would leave with nothing. We will face hindrances and obstacles when we obey the Lord. How then should we respond? We must always interpret our circumstances in the light of God’s Word. We do not react and respond in pride. Jacob took matters into his own hands. What he did was foolish and God intervened. It was in Genesis 31:8-12 that Jacob acknowledged that God was the One who did not allow Laban to hurt him and blessed him with the speckled and spotted cattle. God used the circumstances in Jacob’s life to turn him to God. God worked in Jacob’s life and fulfilled His promises to Him (in Gen 28:15) despite his pride and foolishness.

God will fulfill His promises and callings for us. We must trust in His perfect timing. When we repent and turn back to the Lord, God can and will use us. May the Lord help us to stand on His promises.
