The Apostle Paul never stopped praying for the believers in Ephesus. He would always give thanks to God for them and prayed that they might have wisdom in the knowledge of God. In Ephesians 1:18-19, the Apostle Paul continued to pray for the believers in Ephesus that they might know God’s power. He wanted them to have a personal perspective of the power of God. Similarly, we, who are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, must also pray to know God’s power because it is by knowing His power that our minds can be enlightened to know the hope of Christ’s calling and also the exceeding greatness of His power in our lives.

Our minds were once blinded by the god of this world (2 Cor 4:4). But after we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, the power of God will illumine our eyes, changing our perspective of life and the things of this world. Our motives for working hard will no longer be to amass great wealth and glory for ourselves, but rather, we will want to serve God and to glorify His name. We will become a different person and our joy in life will not be on worldly gain or possessions but will be on the hope of Christ’s calling (Eph 1:18b).

The calling of the Lord Jesus Christ is to obey God the Father by becoming a man, born of a virgin. Jesus had fulfilled all righteousness and had lived a sinless life here on earth. He suffered and died on the cross so that through His death on the cross, the wages of our sins are paid in full (Rom 6:23) and that we can have forgiveness and eternal life. The resurrection of Christ on the third day after His death has also given us the hope that one day we too will have a glorified body, which is “the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints” (Eph 1:18b). Therefore, having been saved from our sins, we, as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, are now a walking testimony of God’s power here in this world.

The power of God is of “exceeding greatness” (Eph 1:19) as everything in the universe is under His control. As believers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we will be able to see God’s hand working in our lives and will be aware of Him directing our lives. We will know that there is no limit to God’s dominance and that every event in our lives occurs because God has allowed it to happen.

The power of God is never based on how we feel but on the doctrine in which God had revealed unto us in His Word. We must therefore pray that God will enlighten our eyes so that we can have the experiential knowledge of His power working in our lives.
