The crux of this chapter is the fulfilment of God’s Word. Abraham and Sarah were already past their child-bearing age but they had God’s promise to them.

Genesis 21:1-2: God’s Word is true.

God will bring to pass whatever He says. All we have to do is to believe. Abraham and Sarah did not have the Bible with them at that time but only God’s voice. Today, we have the whole Bible in our hands. Do we believe all that are written therein? The words in the Bible are more than just history. They are God’s words to us.

The word “visit” in verse 1 means “call to remembrance.” God will always remember what He said. The God who gave the promise to Abraham and Sarah is the same today. He never changes.

Genesis 21: 3-4: God’s Word is obeyed.

The key phrase is “as God had commanded him.” There is only one thing expected from Abraham: to obey God. Abraham obeyed God’s commandment and named his son Isaac. We must always obey God’s Word. God’s Word is perfect and it will never cause us to make mistakes.

Abraham also circumcised Isaac. It was a bloody and painful process. Circumcision was God’s command and Abraham obeyed. Circumcision was a sign of a covenant between God and Abraham.

Genesis 21:5-7: God’s Word will always bring joy.

God’s Word is never meant to make us miserable. We become miserable when we want to fulfil the lust of our eyes, the lust of our flesh and the pride of life. When we obey God’s Word it will always bring us joy.

Let us continue to encourage one another to obey God’s Word. We want God’s will to be done in our lives. God’s will is the best for us. He will grant us the strength to go through our lives if we submit and obey Him.
