There are three aspects we need to consider in our service for the Lord: the hands, the head, and the heart. The hands typically refer to the administration and planning aspects of the ministry. The head refers to the doctrinal aspect of the ministry. The heart refers to the willingness to learn and teachability of a person. Out of these three aspects, the heart is the most important. Having a teachable heart is of most importance in the service of God. From the text, we learnt about the commitment, giving and work of willing hearts.

1. The Commitment (Exod 35:1-3)

The construction of the Tabernacle involves extensive work. The children of Israel may be very excited to start the work of the Tabernacle, however over time they may lose their commitment and the construction work may become mundane to them. As such, while constructing the tabernacle, they must remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. They must rest from all their labour and come together to worship God on the Sabbath day. This is the Sabbath day rest (cf. Heb 4:4). The sabbath rest is a foretaste of our eternal rest in heaven. This also reminds us of our salvation. Only those who are saved in Christ can enjoy the Sabbath rest. Let us give our commitment to God by keeping the Sabbath rest. Let us do so with willing hearts when we gather with God’s people to worship God and refocus our lives in God’s service.

2. The Giving (Exod 35:4-9)

The children of Israel gave their offerings to the construction of the Tabernacle. They did so willingly with cheerful hearts. Giving serves as a reminder to them that it is a privilege and joy for them to be part of the construction of God’s Tabernacle. Our tithes and offerings should not be considered as a tax. It should be given to God out of a thankful and willing heart because all that we have belongs to Him. Without Him, we can do nothing and we have nothing at all. Let us always give with willing hearts to the Lord who loves us.

3. The Work (Exod 35:10-19)

The children of Israel also gave their service by working in the construction of the Tabernacle. The people who were skilful in different parts of the construction of the Tabernacle offered their service willingly. God who is Almighty could have constructed the Tabernacle on His own, but He gave His people the privilege to be a part of the construction. Giving to God our substance is not the only way to give, we can also give to Him by using our spiritual gifts faithfully. Every believer is given at least one spiritual gift. As God’s children, we must make use of our spiritual gifts to serve Him with willing hearts.
