Christian husbands must be convicted of their biblical role, and submit to God. And this role, like his wife’s role as a wife, is non-negotiable.

In Ephesians 5:25, Apostle Paul used the love of Jesus for the Church to describe the love that husbands are to have for their wives. As long as the husband and wife are alive, they are to remain married, just as Jesus does not stop loving the Church. Only death can end the husband/wife relationship. This love is agape love (in the present tense and in the imperative, not an option). This agape love is unconditional and sacrificial. The role of the husband is to love his wife. With this as the foundation, the rest of their relationship will fall into place.

1.  The Word of God (Eph 5:26)

This love is bound by the parameter of God’s Word and truth. The husband is to love his wife unto death and protect her even if it costs him his life. He is to love his wife as Christ loves His Church. The weakness of the husband is to love more than one woman (eg: King Solomon, King David). His only protection is God’s Word. He must daily read and study God’s Word, and keep his love for Christ alive. Then can he keep his love for his wife alive. He has to help her grow spiritually with the knowledge of God’s Word, and help her to improve. Thus, he himself must first know God’s Word. Christ is our example par excellence. When both husband and wife know and treasure God’s Word, they will also teach God’s Word to their children. And the result will be a godly family.

2.  The ultimate purpose (Eph 5:27)

Just as Jesus can present His Church “holy and without blemish,” the husband must nurture his wife with the aim that his wife will be a godly woman, in control of her emotions, holy and without blemish before the Lord.

As believers, we must all fulfill the roles that God has for us, and God is pleased to be the Head in our homes and He guarantees that our homes will be blessed.
