Joseph’s brothers were afraid when they found the money they paid for the grain back in their sacks. They responded with, What is this that God hath done unto us? (Gen 42:28) implying that they blamed God for it.

Do we blame God when something bad happens to us? Or when we do not get what we want? Or when we lose a loved one? Or when we lose our health?

1. We are tempted to blame God in adverse circumstances

“Why me?” some may ask when in adverse situations. Our pride may cause us to blame God as we think we deserve better. Have you blamed God for your suffering during this pandemic?

2.  We must guard against blaming God
Remember that God is God. We have to yield to Him, not question Him. Christian parents must be a good example to their children and acknowledge the hand of God in their lives. Trust in God instead of blaming God. Trust in His sovereign will in our lives. God allows these things to happen to us to test and strengthen our faith.

3.  Fear can cause us to blame God

When Joseph’s brothers were afraid of the situation, they blamed God for their predicament.

4.  A lack of faith can cause us to blame God

Joseph’s brothers lack of trust and poor spiritual condition led them to blame God. In Genesis 50:20, we can contrast Joseph’s view of events with that of his brothers. Joseph was able to see the hand of God, but his brothers could not.

We must not interpret God’s design and plan with our finite mind. God’s ways are higher than our ways. Know that God’s way is perfect. Do not doubt or question God as it will cause us to stray away from Him. Learn to see the hand of God in all things as Joseph did. Make sure we are right with God. Do not blame God.
