Apostle Paul taught that we are to “be filled with the Spirit” (Eph 5:18) and to “walk in the Spirit” (Gal 5:25). In Genesis 41:37-57, we see the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in a believer.

1.  He will say what God wants him to say (Gen 41:37-45)

The word “discreet” (Gen 41:39) means to have understanding; and “wise” is to be skilful. Pharaoh said that Joseph had understanding and was skilful. Pharaoh named Joseph, “Zaphnath-paaneah” (Gen 41:45), which is translated: “the one in whom God speaks and lives.” Through Joseph’s life and conduct, Pharaoh (a heathen) could see that God spoke and lived in him. Just as Joseph told Pharaoh both the good and bad news, a spiritual man is to speak the whole counsel of God. We must have the boldness and courage to speak the truth of God.

2.  He will undertake the responsibilities entrusted to him (Gen 41:46-49)

Pharaoh not only promoted Joseph but also entrusted to him all responsibilities and duties (Gen 41:33b). Joseph was not overtaken by pride with this promotion and great authority. He went to work immediately, remaining humble and undertook his duties responsibly. We see the initiative of Joseph when he prepared for the 7 years of famine during the 7 years of plenty. Likewise, do we have foresight of the things of God and the eternal things to come? Do we have the initiative and urgency to do the work of the gospel and the things of God now?

3.  He will be spiritually minded (Gen 41:50-59)

Joseph saw God in every aspect of his life and gave glory to God. This is seen in how he named his sons. “Manasseh” means to remove and forget. Joseph had forgiven and forgotten the afflictions he faced in his father’s house. He was spiritually minded to forgive his brothers and to forget their sin against him. “Ephraim” means double fruitfulness. Joseph saw that God was the One who made him fruitful. Even in the midst of afflictions, Joseph said that God was good and that He was the One who prospered him.

A man filled with the Spirit of God is one who speaks the truth and is responsible in all that he does. He is spiritually minded to know God’s purpose in all things. Are we living our lives as one who has the Spirit of God in us?
