Unity is not uniformity. A person can put on a uniform to look the same as the rest externally but one cannot enforce unity.

Unity is very precious and important in our witness for Christ and it must be protected.

We must keep this unity for the following three reasons.

1.  It is a worthy unity (Eph 4:1)

After salvation, our calling is to witness for Christ. This vocation must be precious to us. All of us are called to the same vocation to witness for Christ. This calling is given to us by Christ Himself. The Lord Jesus has already accomplished this unity for us and we are to promote it. We must do whatever it takes to promote this unity for Christ’s sake.

2.  It is a resilient unity (Eph 4:2-3)

Pride is the number one enemy of unity. God has given us the mind of Christ from the moment we are born again. We must follow Christ to be lowly and meek. We must be longsuffering with people who are difficult, and be patient in forbearing with trials. We must endeavour speedily to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

3.  It is an unbreakable unity (Eph 4:4-6)

There is only one body in Christ, and He is the Head. We all have the same spirit of Christ upon salvation. We all have the same hope to arrive in the same destination as we head in the same direction towards the same Saviour. This unity is unbreakable because it has been accomplished by the invisible hand of the Lord Jesus Christ.
