The Apostle Paul prayed for the believers in Ephesus to grow spiritually, to know the love of Christ and to be filled with the completeness of God. This “fullness of God” (Eph 3:19b) means the believers are to have the image of Christ in all areas of their lives. Paul prayed that the believers might have the following:

  1. Common Experience (Eph 3:18)

All believers “may be able” (i.e. to have full strength) to comprehend with all saints:

  • the breadth of God’s love: The love of God is given to all people without distinction, regardless of race, language, status, etc. Paul wanted them to share God’s love with others, even with their enemies. There is no limit to the breadth of God's love.
  • the length of God’s love: God’s love is from eternity past to eternity future, without end. We live in a world where everything has an end, but God’s love (and thus His relationship with us) has no end.
  • the depth of God’s love: God's love is so deep that it can can save the worst of worst sinners. E.g. Saul, the persecutor of Christians.
  • the height of God’s love: God’s love gives believers eternal and permanent perfection in Christ Jesus, and they are bound for heaven.
  1. Surpassing Experience (Eph 3:19a)

God's love for us surpasses our knowledge. We with our finite minds cannot fully comprehend how God the Father can give His Son to save us (filthy sinners). It is God who gives us the understanding.

  1. Complete Experience (Eph 3:19b)

Knowing Christ’s love will bring believers to a complete experience in Christ. When believers are filled with the fullness of God (filled with the knowledge of Christ) and sanctified by God’s Word, the image of Christ will be visible through the believers’ holy living.

Paul asks the believers to remember God's love, to live for Christ, and to be a holy witness for Christ until the day of glorification. The world’s knowledge will die but the love of Christ is forever. We must cherish God’s love, never let it diminish, keep it burning in our lives, and be a holy witness for Him.
