Christians are called to be witnesses for God. Our words and conduct are seen by others. There are many instances where a lack of a good testimony stumble others from receiving Jesus. And there are also many good testimonies that led people to the Lord Jesus Christ. Whether we are a good or bad testimony, we affect the people around us. Our witness must be consistently good whatever our circumstances. In Genesis 26:12-15, Isaac was a good testimony to the Philistines.

1. A good witness in times of blessing (Gen 26:12-14)

Isaac was obedient to God and He blessed him. Isaac continued to obey God by sowing in the land. In times of plenty, we must remember to remain faithful and obedient to our Lord. Many times, we forget God when He provides us with plenty. When blessings are not used properly, they can become a curse.

2. A good witness in times of testing (Gen 26:15-22)

Because Isaac was faithful in times of blessing, he was also ready to be a good witness in times of testing. The well was rightfully Isaac’s, but the herdsmen of Gerar violently took it from Isaac. Isaac did not strive with the Philistines but went to dig another well. Again the second well was snatched from him, the name of the place was Sitnah (accuse). But Isaac did not strive with them but went on to dig yet another well. This was Isaac’s good witness and testimony in times of testings. Even though he has the right to those wells, he was willing to give up his right for the sake of his testimony. Paul also taught the Corinthian Christians to give up their rights for the sake of their testimony and the gospel of Christ.

3. A good witness in times of rest (Gen 26:23-25)

The third well was built in Rehoboth. This is to remind Isaac that God provided for Him. This well serves as a symbol and reminder to Isaac of God’s covenantal promise that God has with Him. Isaac dug this well as a testimony of God’s providence for Him. Many times when we do not insist on our rights, we see that God still provides for us and we do not lack anything.

It is wonderful to know that we can rest in the promises of God. And God will honour us in His own way. Thus, our testimony must show that the Lord is faithful and true. Will you give up your rights and maintain a godly witness for Christ? May we be good witnesses in every aspect and situation of our lives.
