To be mindful is to put a fixture in our mind and life. This fixture is something that is very much a part of us, that we cannot do without, that others will identify us with. The fixture is revealed through our actions and words, and can be seen and experienced by others after a period of time. As Christians, we must let God’s Word be the permanent fixture in our lives. In 2 Peter 3:1-2, Peter teaches us how to be mindful of God’s Word constantly.

1) Stir up our mind (2 Pet 3:1)

It is not possible to stir up a mind that is dead in sin. This stirring up can only apply to “pure minds,” i.e. to truly born-again Christians. The Christian mind sometimes are not awake because the world is still attractive to our bodily lusts. We must not be enticed by the world and end up wasting our life. This is what Peter wants to stir us up from. What have we been up to? What spiritual work have we been occupied with? Just attending worship services or church meetings/activities is not good enough. May our pure minds be stirred up so that we realise we must be in active service for the Lord.

2) Remind our mind (2 Pet 3:1b)

We must constantly remind ourselves of God’s Word. We must receive God’s Word in its totality and not pick and choose what we want to accept or what is convenient for our carnal lifestyle. We are to keep reading and studying God’s Word to remember God’s Word. It is impossible to live a holy life without knowing God’s Word well. We must take hold of every opportunity to study God’s Word. One way is to be active in attending Bible Study groups.

3) Fill our mind (2 Pet 3:2)

As we stir up our minds not to go after the world, and as we constantly study God’s Word to remember it, our minds will soon be filled with God’s Word. God’s Word will become our fixture. The Holy Spirit in us will allow God’s Word to fill our entire body and soul, convicting us of God’s truth and way, awakening our minds to align our desires to God’s desire.

We must be mindful of God’s Word. There will be many false teachers and scoffers in the world trying to deceive us and drive us away from God. It is a daily challenge that we must emerge victorious by making God’s Word a fixture in us.
