Many people claimed to be Christians. However, not everyone is a true believer of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 7:21: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”

It is therefore important for us to be assured of our salvation. When we doubt our salvation, we will not serve Him or do His will. Thus we will not be useful to Him.

Salvation is not anchored in our emotions or in our good works, but purely in the Word of God. Many “Christians” give only lip service to God, and their lives do not reflect what they say. They lack self-control, will give in to their lusts and will compromise their testimonies for Christ. They lack the experiences which a true believer of the Lord Jesus Christ experiences (2 Pet 1:5-7). A true believer will then display “charity,” which is an expression of Agape love. Professed “Christians” do not bear the “fruit of the Spirit” (Gal 5:22-23) in their lives.

An assurance of salvation in Christ is when the “fruit of the Spirit” is seen in one’s life. Just as a good and healthy tree will naturally bear good fruits, a true believer of the Lord Jesus Christ can be assured of his salvation when he bears the “fruit of the Spirit.” Those who do not have the experiences mentioned in 2 Peter 1:5-7 and who do not bear the “fruit of the Spirit” are spiritually blind and they will not be able to see spiritual things. Their lives cannot be transformed as they are not born again and are still living in sin. If we belong to this group, we must immediately repent and pray for God’s forgiveness and salvation. Only by true repentance and believe in God will He fill us with the Holy Spirit to enable us to study and understand His Word so that we can bear the “fruit of the Spirit” and be used by God to do His sovereign will.

In these last days, there will be many false assurances of salvation through the many false teachings and representations of Christ (2 Thess 2:3). False assurance is the worst because it makes us think that we are saved when in actual fact we are not and are heading for hell. We must therefore be assured of our salvation by repenting of all our sins and leading a holy life, bearing the “fruit of the Spirit” for the glory of God.
