The popular belief is that God answers our prayers in three ways: yes, no, or wait. But the Bible teaches us that God will always say “yes” to His children when we pray correctly, i.e. when we regard not iniquities in our heart and pray in accordance to God’s will. Therefore, we ought to have every confidence that God will always say “yes” to our prayer.

1. God answers according to His timing (Gen 24:15)

God does not answer too early nor too late. Our problem is we want God to answer our prayers according to our own timing, thinking our timing is the best timing. But God answers prayers according to His timing, which is the best timing. In Genesis 24, God answered Abraham’s servant’s prayer even before he was done praying. The right timing results in glory being given to God. All prayers must lead to the glory of God.

2. God’s choice is always the best choice (Gen 24:16-21)

Abraham’s servant had only one choice. He saw Rebekah immediately after he prayed. Should he have been given more options to choose from? God’s choice is the best. One is enough! Rebekah had many good points. She was beautiful, which attracted the servant to her. She was a virgin, which showed that she honoured the sanctity of marriage, thus helping to keep the Messianic line pure. She was ready and prompt in following instructions, not procrastinating, showing her hospitality. She also had initiative, offering to do beyond what was expected of her, showing her caring and helpful character. Even then, the servant was not completely sure if Rebekah was the right one. Then he found out her family background, and he was sure.

3. God’s name is praised when God answers prayer (Gen 24:22-27)

Upon knowing God had answered his prayer, the servant bowed down and worshipped God. He was full of gratitude towards God. This must also be our response whenever God answers our prayer. Let us realise the power of prayer and how God answers our prayers. We are just His instruments to accomplish His will. If God is pleased to use us to accomplish His will, we must simply give thanks to Him and be grateful. It is not about us, but always about God.

When we pray, we must always believe that God’s timing and choice are the best. Then we will not second guess, murmur or complain. When He answers, we will trust that that is what He wants for us. And we will then respond with our sincere praise and thanksgiving.
