We go through many trials in our life. When God sends trials to test our faith He will make sure that the trials match our faith, and He will give us what we need to pass the test (1 Cor 10:13). We can learn from Abraham how he passed his test of faith.

1) A faith that has no doubt (Gen 22:1-2)

Abraham answered God readily, as a servant is ready to receive his master’s instruction. Although Abraham had another son (Ishmael), Isaac was the chosen promised seed of Abraham. Abraham loved Isaac very much. When God told Abraham to offer Isaac as a burnt offering, he obeyed without any question. Human sacrifice is not evil when God commands it, because as the Giver of life He has the right to take life.

2) A faith that obeys immediately (Gen 22:3-6)

Abraham did not procrastinate or delay in obeying God’s command. He rose up and left early the following morning with Isaac to the place God had told him to go.

3) A faith that believes in God’s provision (Gen 22:7-14)

In Abraham’s reply to his servants in Genesis 22:5, he believed that both he and Isaac would return (even after he has offered Isaac as a burnt offering). He believed that God would raise Isaac from the dead.

4) A faith that passes the test receives God’s blessing (Gen 22:15-19)

God blessed Abraham to show His approval of Abraham’s faith. God promised Abraham countless descendants and protection against their enemies. Through Abraham’s faith, we can have salvation through Jesus Christ.

When we measure our faith against Abraham’s, let us not think that Abraham was in a better position than us in that God spoke to Abraham. Today, we have the complete Word of God and we have many opportunities to study the Word of God, so we can exercise the same faith as Abraham exercised his. However, many a times, we fail God by our lack of faith and by our disobedience. Are we willing to give up everything in our lives so that we may obey God? Let us learn to walk by faith and not by sight. May God help us.
