In 2 Corinthians, Apostle Paul wrote to defend his Apostleship and the work of the Gospel of Christ as his calling and ministry were questioned by some people. 2 Corinthians 2:12 tells us that Apostle Paul continued his ministry to Troas and Macedonia and did not stop or give up the ministry of the Gospel. The source and basis of his calling and ministry is explained in 2 Corinthians 2:14-17.

1. The Saviour (2 Cor 2:14)

This is the first thing that the Apostle Paul was thankful for. Foremost in his mind was the triumph he had in the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us never forget to give thanks to God for the victory we have in Christ. This is the source of Apostle Paul’s passion and zeal. The word “triumph” describes a triumphant procession. We have victory in the Lord Jesus Christ when He died on the cross for us. He has given us victory over death and the devil. Thus, the Lord Jesus Christ must be first our lives. There must be rejoicing and excitement when we serve in Christ.

2. The Savour (2 Cor 2:15-16)

The word “savour” means smell. It is a pleasant smell. When the victorious procession marched in, the fragrance in the air would allow the people to experience the victory as well. We are the “savour” of Christ that would manifest His victory that others will know of the victory of Christ. We are the sweet smell of Christ.

Three groups of people are referred to in these verses. We are first to be a sweet smell unto God. Our whole life is to be a sweet savour unto the Lord. Second, to them who perish. The sweet savour would serve as a condemnation to those who perish. As we live a holy and righteous life, our lives could be offensive to the unbelievers, and they may hate us but may respect us for our convictions. Third, we must be a sweet savour to our fellow believers. We must edify one another in Christ.

3. The Sufficiency (2 Cor 2:16-17)

Our sufficiency must be in God. But it must also include our diligence and hard work. We are empowered and guided by God. Of ourselves, we will not be sufficient in the things that we do. The Lord who has called us will also enable us to do His work.
