The Fourth Commandment (of the Ten Commandments) reminds believers to keep the Sabbath Day holy unto God (Exod 20:8). The world regards Sunday as a day for resting at home and for their personal enjoyment. Believers are not to do so. We are to keep the entire Lord’s Day holy unto God.

1. The Sabbath Day is created for God's people

The Sabbath Day is a day of rest (after six days of labour) given by God (Exod 20:9). It is also a time set aside for God’s children to worship Him. We are to work hard during the six days of labour so that we can faithfully set aside the Sabbath Day solely for God. God has commanded that our entire household is not to do any work on the Sabbath Day but to keep it holy (Exod 20:10), with the head of the household leading and showing this by example. God Himself rested on the seventh day after six days of creation (Exod 20:11). Hence, we must also set aside the Sabbath Day for God.

2. To teach believers to trust in God and to walk by faith

The retail industry regards Sunday as the best day to do business. Believers, however, are not to follow this in order to make more money on Sunday. We are to obey the Fourth Commandment and worship God on the Lord’s Day. We are to put God first for the entire Lord’s Day by worshipping Him, in the form of public (in church) and private (at home) worship, instead of doing business and making more money. We are to trust in God to provide for our needs, as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 6:33.

3. To prepare believers for the eternal Sabbath

The Sabbath Day serves as a reminder to believers of the eternal Sabbath that is to come. Keeping the Lord’s Day holy is a foretaste of the time when believers will be in heaven, worshipping and praising God for eternity. Hence, believers must look forward to worshipping God on the Lord’s Day, regarding this Day as important and holy.

The Lord's Day is an important day because it reminds us of God’s love, mercy and grace in sending Jesus to die for us and save us from our sins. Let us keep this Day holy for the Lord and worship Him in spirit and in truth. May God help us.
