In Exodus 20:4, the second of the Ten Commandments tells us that we are not to make any idol to represent God. This includes any kind of images of everything on earth. Those who use various images to depict Christ have broken the second commandment. We are to worship God according to the truth that He has revealed to us (i.e. according the Bible’s teaching).

Exodus 20:5 tells us that we are not to bow down or to serve images. Bowing is an act of obeisance. Worship can only be given to God. What follows after worship is service. The only one who is worthy of worship and service is the God of the Holy Scriptures.

The Ark of the Covenant is a representation of the presence of God. It is not an image of God. It is kept out of sight in the Holy of Holies where only the high priest can enter once a year. Hence, the Ark of the Covenant does not contravene the Second Commandment.

Why is it important to keep the Second Commandment?

1. God is a jealous God (Exod 20:5)

This is part of God’s character. Jealousy is good when it is expressed in a right manner for the right reason. God owns us and we belong to Him. God expects His people to be faithful.

2. God will punish idolators (Exod 20:5)

Deuteronomy 13 tells us that every idol worshipper will be punished by stoning to death. Those who worship idols are called “those who hate God.” The punishment of God goes even to future generations.

3. God will bless those who love Him (Exod 20:6)

We can only love God rightly if we know Him rightly. Love and obedience must go together. God will show His mercy to all who obey Him. Mercy is when God withholds His judgment from us. If not for God’s mercy, we will all be destroyed because of our sins.
