The Ten Commandments function as a sword, to slay us in our sin (Rom 7:10-11), a rod, to lead us to Christ (Gal 3:24) and a lamp, to light up our path (Ps 119:105). God gave us the Ten Commandments to tell us how to live our lives in a manner that honour and glorify Him. The context in which the Ten Commandments were given is in Exodus 19. It tells us that God came to the children of Israel in a terrifying manner. This was to instil the fear of the holy God in the people. We are not to approach our holy God any way we like.

Exodus 20:1-2 gives the preface to the Ten Commandments. It is the very word of God, who introduced Himself as “the LORD thy God.” God is telling the people that He is always present with them, always desiring a close relationship with His people. God emphasized Egypt to be a house of bondage to remind the children of God why they had to leave Egypt. They were not having a good time there even though Egypt was a land of abundance. They were not to remain there to enjoy the abundance. They had a calling to fulfil. God is a God who keeps His promise. This is the same God we believe in and so we can trust in Him. As we come before His presence, we are also to have this fear and reverence in us.

Exodus 20:3 is the First Commandment. The Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 46 tells us what is required of us in this commandment. We are to know God rightly and personally. This is done through knowing God’s Word, God’s appointed source. Whatever God wants us to know about Him is recorded in the Bible. Let us be diligent and committed to study the Bible. “To know Christ and to make Him known” should be the life motto of every Christian.

We are to acknowledge God wherever we are. People around us must know we are Christians. We are to stand up for God. Acknowledge God day by day and our experience of God will grow. Thomas Vincent said that we are to worship and glorify God with our whole being. Let us surrender our all to God. In all aspects of our lives, let nothing be for self but all for God. Do not have any idols (physical or otherwise) in our hearts and minds. This commandment is the basis and foundation of our faith. We must make this right and have the correct Object of our faith and worship. Let us not take this lightly. As we continue to look into the Ten Commandments, let us be mindful of this first one, the foundation of everything else.
