Antinomians are Christians who believe that the Ten Commandments have been superseded by grace and are therefore no longer applicable since we are saved by faith alone. However, God has taught us that to obey God’s law.

The Ten Commandments are not just for the Old Testament Jews only. They are still very relevant and applicable to Christians today. In the Sermon on the Mount, our Lord Jesus had expounded on the Ten Commandments in greater details. Although not the means for salvation, the Ten Commandments are the underlying principles in which the Lord’s “new commandment” (John 13:34) originates. They are God’s will and standard for holy and righteous living. We are therefore to obey the Ten Commandments. Jesus was subjected to the law when He came into this world to die for our sins. He was our perfect substitute. He obeyed all the laws when He was here on earth, covering us with the righteousness of the law (Rom 8:4) and fulfilling the law for our salvation (Rom 10:4).

Being covered by God’s righteousness and knowing what God has done for us, we must love and desire to keep God’s law in our hearts and to obey them (1 John 5:1). When we have true faith and believe that God has saved us from our sins through Jesus, we are the children of God and followers of Christ. If we truly love God and want to please Him, we will want to keep His commandments and love His people (1 John 5:2). There are many ways in which we can love our brethren. We can encourage one another and help others in their spiritual and physical needs. We must also support one another through our actions (e.g. rebuke in love, be forgiving and forbearing, praying, etc.) and not by our words only.

God’s commandments are easy and light. They are not grievous (1 John 5:3). God has given us the Ten Commandments for our good. As believers, we can put our trust in God and look to Him for help when we face difficulties or trials in life. Our God is the Almighty God. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we “can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil 4:13). We must not rely on men or even ourselves because our strength is limited.

Let us not make excuses to not obey the Ten Commandments. They are still relevant today. They are given to us by God to help us live a holy and righteous life for His glory. Therefore let us pray for God to teach us to love and obey the Ten Commandments. May God help us.
