Pastoral Letter 20 Sep 2020

My dear readers,

Israel the Indestructible Nation of nations!

Israel is the only nation on earth where everything about her has been ordained by the One living and true God. God designed this nation by Himself. He needed Christ the Son of God to come to earth with a nationality. All the nations of the earth grew out of idolatry. The LORD did not take a Gentile nation and “renovate” it into a spiritual nation for the Son of God to be born into. The LORD started fresh and designed His nation. He started with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (i.e. “usurper”). He gave the name Israel when He changed Jacob's name to Israel (i.e. “prince of God”). The Messianic line from the time of Exodus was protected within the nation. If the devil wanted to sever the godly line of the Messiah, he had to infiltrate Israel. He tried.

The LORD taught the nation of Israel how to be a holy witness for Christ. Dietary laws and dressing laws were given by the LORD. Their holy days and their religious calendar were ordained by Him. Nothing was left to man to decide on his own. The world needed the spiritual and godly witness of Israel to point them to Christ. Israel succeeded by the grace and mercies of God despite the many years that Israel did what was right in her own eyes (the period of Judges). The period that followed was the monarchy. It was not much better but it was also a successful witness in which holiness (although not perfect) was the norm. This is also true of the church witness today despite the last days that we are living in. The LORD did not fail His people and the world, even though it may appear so at times from man’s perspective.

Though Israel had rejected Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah, the LORD has not and will not reject Israel. The LORD has promised Israel in Genesis 15 that she will rule on earth over a vast territory. Genesis 15:18-21: “In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.” This promise has yet to be fulfilled, for even in the days of King David and Solomon, their kingdom did not cover the territories described here in Genesis 15. But it will be fulfilled in the Millennium. God always keeps His holy Word.

This means that Israel will continue to exist no matter how many times and how hard Satan will try to destroy her. The Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and the Romans had all tried. Israel remained independent and did not lose her identity even as she lived under the yoke of Gentile nations for hundreds of years. The Second World War was one of the worst times for Israel when six million Jews were slaughtered by Hitler. This was a spiritual attack, not a political or physical one. From 1948 onwards, Israel received her independence again from the LORD. Ever since then more and more Jews have returned to their Promised Land. No matter how hard the devil tries, Israel will be protected by the LORD. Israel is indestructible. Here are some statistics of the Jews’ return and their population worldwide (taken from “Hashivah” - The Return. Volume XLII, Number 3, 2020-5780 by Dr Herbert Hillel Goldberg): “The number of Jews in the world today stands at 14,410,700, the same number as in 1925, according to an annual report submitted to Knesset (Israel parliament) on July 20 and various sources published recently: Israel-6,740,000; North America-6,092,000; Europe-1,072,400; South America-324,000; Asia (excl. Israel)-300,000; Australia/New Zealand-120,000; Africa-74,000. In 1939, just before the Holocaust, the Jewish population reached an all-time peak of 16.7 million. In 1948, the number of Jews had been reduced to 11.5 million, 650,000 of them in Israel. . . . On July 1, at a Jerusalem Post conference dealing with the coronavirus, Isaac Herzog, chairman of the Jewish Agency, announced that up to a quarter-million Jews are expected to move to Israel in the next five years (Jerusalem Post, July 2020). Why now? The trigger has been the COVID-19 virus. With rampant financial ruin, widespread unemployment, disruption of children’s education, and chaos in health-care, many Jews want to move on and start over … this time in Israel. Jewish immigration to Israel is up almost fifty percent this year compared with 2019 when 34,000 Jews made the move.”

Numerous attempts had been made to destroy the Jewish people, including the time of Esther when Haman the Agagite passed a law to kill all the Jews inside the Persian Empire (literally all the Jews as Israel was controlled by Persia then). Thank God that He defeated this genocidal attempt by Satan. Israel is the apple of God’s eye. It is a nation unlike all the nations of the world. She is protected by the LORD and is therefore indestructible. To fight against Israel is to fight against the Almighty God. The LORD had already prophesied thousands of years ago that Israel will return to their home Land in due time:

Isaiah 43:5-7: “Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.”

Jeremiah 31:6-9: “For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God. For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither. They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.”

Both Isaiah and Jeremiah ministered during the destruction of Israel and Judah respectively. These were words of encouragement and comfort from the LORD to inform His people that Israel will be regathered in the future even as she would be dispersed throughout the world. The first return of Judah in the days of Zerubabbel and Jeshua the high priest was known as the first return. We are living in the days of the second return.

Israel will reign with Jesus Christ the King of kings for 1,000 years in the New Heaven and New Earth. Will you be there?

Food for Thought – Will the LORD find us faithful and watching when He returns?

Yours faithfully in the Saviour’s Service,
